UNVERSÖHNLICHE ERINNERUNGEN is about the Spanish Civil War and contrasts the memories of two Germans who fought on opposing sides. The retired Bundeswehr general and former Legion Condor pilot Henning Strümpell is interviewed at his home in the Taunus region. The mason, antifascist and veteran of the International Brigades Ludwig Stillger and his wife are interviewed in their rented apartment in Remscheid. For the former, the bombing of Spanish cities was a youthful adventure at the beginning of his textbook military career. For the latter, the war was hell, but fighting in the brigades was a moral duty. In the anti-communist climate of West Germany, having fulfilled that duty became a stigma for him. When the film was broadcast on ZDF in 1979, the lesson it offered contemporary audiences was so shameful that the broadcaster was flooded with letters from viewers, all conveying the same sentiment: “That can’t be! That must not be!” Klaus Volkenborn, Johann Feindt and Karl Siebig had met at the DFFB in Berlin. UNVERSÖHNLICHE ERINNERUNGEN was their second film made together and received the “Preis der Deutschen Filmkritik” in 1979 and a Golden Dove at the International Leipzig Documentary and Short Film Week. It also marked the beginning of the Kassel Dokfest: in 1982, the film opened the “1. Reisendes Dokumentarfilmfest Kassel,” from which the Dokfest emerged. This screening also marks the world premiere of the digitally restored version by the Deutsche Kinemathek.
