CN: Sexualized Violence
If you were a river, what kind of river might that be? Kristina Mikhailova interviews women – first artists and activists, then others – near the Aksay River, which becomes a symbol of the flow of life in Kazakhstan and, more specifically, of the forces and power dynamics at work in society there today. The director shows extremes, ranging from utopian ideals to misogyny, moving from spaces of freedom and dreams to the mundane. Soon, everything is in motion: notions of home, nation, past, and future – and ultimately, the images themselves. A debut full of depth that calls for a new era of Kazakh cinema.
