Az Zeeb

| Az Zeeb
(Filmladen)

After his paternal grandmother dies in 2017, Chilean filmmaker Rafael Guendelman finds Super 8 reels documenting his Jewish father’s family, its emigration to Israel, and its return to Chile. His mother is Palestinian, and her family has no such archive. Guendelman travels to Palestine to find Az-Zeeb, the village his mother’s family was expelled from, filming on Super 8 himself and creating an archive where none existed. Testimonies, inherited reels, and new footage merge into a single narrative, resulting in a spectral counter-archive in which the shaky Super 8 blurs then and now, here and there.
