E.1027: Eileen Gray and the House by the Sea

In 1929, Irish designer Eileen Gray built a retreat on the Côte d’Azur – her first house, a discreet, avant-garde masterpiece. She named it E.1027, a cryptic blend of her initials and those of Jean Badovici, who co-created it. When Le Corbusier discovered the house, he became fascinated, even obsessed, and later painted large murals on its subtle walls, violating her work. His photos gained attention, and he was even seen as the architect. Instead of correcting this, he built his famous Le Cabanon nearby. The docu-fiction traces Gray’s vision of modernism and a woman’s fight for recognition against male dominance – then and now.
