Meanwhile in Namibia
Namibia's rural population reenacts a precolonial idyll for German tourists, a fantasy of life free of European influence, in harmony with nature, in short fur skirts. Devised by German GIZ workers, the concept hints at how little Germany has confronted its colonial violence. Berlin refuses reparations for occupying Namibia and the genocide of its indigenous people, funding “Living Museums” instead, echoing colonial “human zoos.” Spriestersbach's camera traces this blurred history: cheerful tourists, cruise passengers, a colonial museum. What visitors don't see: the human bones among the stones.
