The photographer Michael Ruetz is a true master of the moment and yet much more than that. His photos always conceal developments over a long period of time; snapshots thus become images of time, preserving the essence of their creation in a fraction of a second. His pictures of the crows over Auschwitz, having captured the slap in the face that Beate Klarsfeld gave the then Federal Chancellor Kurt Georg Kiesinger, his intimate portraits of Joseph Beuys have significantly shaped our image of Germany – and even at the age of 83 he is far from done.
